The aim of the study is to better understand the changes in gut microbiome in patients with IBD and IBS diagnosis and to evaluate to what extent we could help to improve these conditions through consumption of mix of different prebiotic fibers. The study would give a better insight how the added fiber in the diet will help to improve the microbiota for IBS and also IBD patients and design more accurate nutrition recommendations taking into account their microbiota and diagnoses.
There are about 5000 patients diagnosed with IBD, only in Estonia and the number is growing constantly. As in the USA also in Estonia, IBS diagnoses are growing in numbers. For the doctors, IBS patients are often considered as “healthy diseased”, as doctors understand that patient has complaints, but they do not have symptoms that coincide with the diagnose neither cure can be suggested. Therefore we need to understand how gut microbiome analysis could be an effective tool to prevent or diagnose the disease in an earlier stage, provide significant information for prevention strategies, or provide valuable information for diet intervention.
